Frequently Asked Questions

How do I earn a right to a pension benefit?

You can earn a right to a pension benefit when you become vested in the Plan. Vesting refers to your nonforfeitable right to a pension, payable at your Normal Retirement Age, even if you leave Covered Employment before you are eligible for a pension.

How long does it take to be vested for a pension benefit?

Generally, you become vested when you have five years of vesting service. You earn one year of vesting service for each Plan Year (June 1 – May 31) during which you accumulated 300 or more hours of work in Covered Employment.

Can I borrow or withdraw my pension from the Plan?

No. This Plan is intended to provide retirement, survivor, and disability benefits only.

What is my Normal Retirement Age?

Your Normal Retirement Age is age 65 or, if later, the fifth anniversary of the date you became a participant under the Plan.

What types of pensions are provided under the Plan?

The Plan provides these pensions:

  • A Normal Retirement Pension, which is available when you reach your Normal Retirement Age (usually age 65).
  • A Regular Pension, which is available as early as age 63 if you have at least 10 years of vesting service.
  • An Early Retirement Pension, which is available as early as age 60 if you have at least 10 years of vesting service (this pension is reduced for early retirement).
  • A Disability Pension, which is available at any age if you become totally and permanently Disabled and have at least 10 years of vesting service.
When should my pension application be submitted?

You should submit your application three months before you plan to retire to ensure that your pension payments begin on time.

Can I work after retirement?

Certain work after retirement is considered disqualifying and can result in a suspension of your pension benefits. Before you reach normal retirement age (usually age 65), you cannot work in any disqualifying employment or your benefits will be suspended for any month in which you do work in disqualifying employment. After you reach normal retirement age, you can work less than 40 hours per month, without incurring a suspension of benefits. To check on whether certain work is considered disqualifying, ask the Fund Office in writing.
